Debunking 5 Common Myths About Autism (That Are Still Floating Around in 2025)

It’s 2025 and people still believe some WILD stuff about autism. Let’s talk about five myths that really need to be put to rest and the truths that replace them.

1. Myth: Only boys can be autistic.
Truth: Autism affects all genders. Girls and nonbinary people are often overlooked because they “mask” better or don’t fit outdated stereotypes.

2. Myth: Autistic people don’t want friends.
Truth: Many autistic people crave connection but struggle with social settings, especially if they’ve been bullied or misunderstood.

3. Myth: Nonverbal = unintelligent.
Truth: Nope. Some nonspeaking autistic folks have written books once given access to communication tools.

4. Myth: Autistic = low-functioning or high-functioning.
Truth: The “functioning” labels are outdated. Autism is a spectrum of strengths and support needs, not a linear scale.

5. Myth: Autistic people don’t have emotions.
Truth: Many experience hyper-empathy, but express it in ways neurotypical people might not understand.

Myths hurt. Truth empowers. Let’s educate ourselves and build a world where neurodivergent folks are supported and celebrated.
